Chapter Twelve

Desmond

I couldn’t exactly pinpoint when Jennifer and I became a thing. Hell, I wasn’t too sure if we were even a thing, but it seemed like it to me and I went with it. The two of us had become incredibly close to one another. We’d never voiced it out loud, but we knew what it was. There were definitely feelings between us and they were more than friendly. We had a connection because each of us had experienced tragedies that had derailed our lives at pivotal points. Beyond that, we also had a lot in common and genuinely enjoyed spending time with each other. We studied together and hung out outside of night school. She was quickly becoming one of the people who was closest to me.

I especially liked Jennifer because she and I were about the same age. She was a year older than me, but it wasn’t anything for us to trip over. We were both still young and realized that we had our whole lives ahead of us, which made the process of going through night school that much easier. We’d both gone through periods where we felt like our lives were over, but by talking to one another, we were both starting to realize how wrong about that we were.

As we made more and more progress in night school, we both realized that it was important to take breaks. Because we had each other, we really made sure that we were on top of things. We studied hard but most of the time it was Jennifer who had to remind me that it was alright for us to have fun every now and then. That’s why one night after we got out of class, she suggested that we go out to a local bar to grab a beer and a late dinner. I was with it because I wanted to spend more time with her.

“Have you been here before?” Jennifer asked. We’d just arrived at the bar. The hostess gave us a seat right in the middle of the semi-crowded place. The bar was pretty standard. It had several large TVs on the walls and a bunch of sports memorabilia that was incredibly outdated yet still hung up.

I shook my head. “No, have you?”

“Once or twice,” she said. “I like the food here, and I’m a beer kind of girl and they have a nice selection.”

“You can have all the beer,” I said. “I hate it. Give me a stiff drink, and I’ll be cool.”

“I bet,” she said with a smirk. She got quiet for a moment and then looked up at me. “So, I wanted to ask you about something. But feel free to tell me if I’m overstepping my boundaries.”

I gave her a confused look. “You can ask me anything,” I said simply. Jennifer and I really seemed to be building something. What exactly it was, I didn’t know. What I did know was that I felt comfortable with her and she seemed to feel the same for me.
